image Lady head vases were made primarily in Japan and were popular in America from the late 1940s through the early ’70’s. These ceramic vases were used in florists’ flower arrangements.

There were dozens of manufacturers and thousands of different kinds of vases. As a result, you’ll find them at flea markets and yard sales, antiques malls, and auctions for lady head vases including on eBay.

Makers include Napco, Enesco, Rubens and Betty Lou Nichols, whose marks make good identifiers, but unfortunately not all vases have them. One good way to identify quality vases is to look for flourishes such as necklaces and dangling earrings. These should have a patina about them, and not look new and shiny.

The 2008 Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show is being held right now, and it’s a great chance to see some of the most beautiful and valuable Arabian horses in the world. If you live in the Phoenix metro area it’s an event not to be missed!

At one time I made native costumes for Arabian horse shows. It was a lot of work, but I really enjoyed working with the luxurious fabrics and all the luxe trimmings. If you can, be sure to watch the Native Costume Class.

I few years ago I got on a donkey and mule kick (no pun intended). I owned a mule at the time, and although I’m a horse fanatic, the unusual aspect of these equines – probably the ears – interested me enough that when I came across a cute donkey figurine on eBay I bought it.
